2017 Bird Survey Annual Report
By Lyndsay Jones for the Friends of West Ham Park

In 2017 we again recorded a total of 38 species, a full list is included with this report and also shows which months each species was present. The numbers given are the maximum number seen each month. 12 species were recorded every month, and a further 5 species were seen in 10 or 11 months.

Green Woodpeckers were recorded in 10 months, and  juveniles were seen. Sightings have been much more frequent this year, which is very encouraging after a few years with very irregular sightings. Great Spotted Woodpeckers were seen in 8 months, with one confirmed nest.

Goldcrests were recorded in 6 months, being seen between July and December. We record them for part of each year, but so far there seems to be no pattern as to the months in which they are present.  Goldfinches still seem to be doing well, recorded in 11 months, with a maximum flock of 37.

House Sparrows were recorded every month. They seem to be doing much better in recent years, and we have groups at both Margery and Linden Lodges. A flock of 34 was spotted in July, but generally each group seems to be 4 - 6 individuals.

This was the first year in which Long Tailed Tits were recorded every month, with a maximum flock size of 16 in June.

Ring-necked Parakeets also reached a maximum of 16. We still do not know if they have any effect on the native birds. This year they have been seen frequently around Linden gate, so are now using the whole of the park and garden.

Visitors
We recorded up to 50 Redwings in January, February and March, and 3 Fieldfares in March only.

Other unusual sightings were a Song Thrush, seen in February, and an unconfirmed sighting of a Woodcock in November. This was well described by one of the Park Keepers, and it is hard to see what else it could have been.

Once again, many thanks to the bird survey team for their continuing enthusiasm and reliability.
